5 Types of Network Topologies

NETWORKING- Network topology is a schematic layout of the arrangement of nodes over a network. this layout also determines the manner in which information is exchanged within the network.

5 Types of Network Topologies :

  1. Bus Topology :  the bus topology connects all the nodes on a network to a main cable called bus.

The advantages of the bus topology are  easy installation, relatively inexpensive. And some of limitations are low fault tolerance, inability to handle high network traffic, lower scalability and difficult in troubleshooting and maintenance.
  2. Star Topology : the star topology connect nodes over a network by using a central control unit called the hub.

The advantages of the star topology are higher scalability and ease in troubleshooting and maintenance. although the star topology is flexible and easy to install, it has the following limitations : high cost of installation and SPOF.
  3. Ring Topology : the Ring topology connect the nodes on a network through a point- to- point connection. consequently, no endpoints exist in this type of setup.

The advantages of the ring topology are prevention of collisions and ease in troubleshooting and maintenance. and the limitations of the ring topology are High risk of network failure and expensive setup and installation.
  4. Mesh Topology : the mesh topology involves point-to-point connection between every node in the network.

The advantages of the mesh topology are high reliability and high suitability for Wide Area Networks (WANs). and the limitations of the mesh topology are expensive installation, difficult to maintain and manage, and complex physical layout.
  5. Cellular Topology : the cellular topology is one of the most recent topologies used in network. it is a wireless topology, where geographic area is divided into cells or regions.

The advantages of the cellular topology are no cabling required, easy installation, high flexibility and high mobility among users. and the limitations of the cellular topology are expensive installation and central point of failure.
